Gee-whiz, Neal Fargo only kills three people before the end! Though, to be fair, he does cripple or severely beat up several others.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Despite having less overt violence than most Fargo novels, it's another strong story. Fargo is hired to help a small railroad that is being sabotaged by a larger competitor. He realizes he can't single-handedly guard miles of track, so he instead decides to take the battle to the bad guys, beginning a sabotage campaign against the big company. He takes care to make sure no one innocent is hurt while blowing up water towers, bridges and spurs.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsfQ3j-wq4z1y6ow2Sly1GL3KyNoQlyqQSulZDMPhQRKc-QLUB1ZvjpzcG9NpzLvoCdObS8cKUSa1-L2eerVQLnTOZ9G8MVev3gIJZGiWGnp9M68K731bZrRKUwjxqG9UQivlssXCHiZBFxOzcD6zAYsaBtPhs7ZAGQZd34Q6ts0cUR5rXaq3T4X9VEA/s445/5124yT3pNQL._SX342_SY445_QL70_ML2_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="445" data-original-width="315" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsfQ3j-wq4z1y6ow2Sly1GL3KyNoQlyqQSulZDMPhQRKc-QLUB1ZvjpzcG9NpzLvoCdObS8cKUSa1-L2eerVQLnTOZ9G8MVev3gIJZGiWGnp9M68K731bZrRKUwjxqG9UQivlssXCHiZBFxOzcD6zAYsaBtPhs7ZAGQZd34Q6ts0cUR5rXaq3T4X9VEA/w454-h640/5124yT3pNQL._SX342_SY445_QL70_ML2_.jpg" width="454" /></a></div>Along the way, he survives a couple of attempts to kill him and eventually faces off against a fast-draw artist who heads up security for the bad guys. The novel concludes with a desperate hand-to-hand fight against the main bad guy while aboard a train that's racing towards a head-on collision with another train. Though the overall body count is unusually low for a Fargo novel, good storytelling and the intensity of that final fight on the train still make this one another winner in the series...</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-70454666605938527332023-01-23T13:29:00.004-08:002023-01-23T13:30:05.209-08:00WESTERN NOVELS—GUNSIGHTS<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoDAQhaIpnzotvpl3i9O8SjmvMVB5HLkXRsLGqY83jS4kcOzrm9UiH63d-lvEEquUSCjG75KwWS9qDLiY4uPTlZZdp6QVd9RcCit3-O9IEJ4F6lZWfAOcb7J0UCi_5G0LaYqThPgl3ZYTLKp4UNcUf7oto7TcJtcoLO9JHfqifImv5QiVTJBlvIP26mA/s400/FB_IMG_1673936513605.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="249" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoDAQhaIpnzotvpl3i9O8SjmvMVB5HLkXRsLGqY83jS4kcOzrm9UiH63d-lvEEquUSCjG75KwWS9qDLiY4uPTlZZdp6QVd9RcCit3-O9IEJ4F6lZWfAOcb7J0UCi_5G0LaYqThPgl3ZYTLKp4UNcUf7oto7TcJtcoLO9JHfqifImv5QiVTJBlvIP26mA/w398-h640/FB_IMG_1673936513605.jpg" width="398" /></a></div>WESTERN NOVELS</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>GUNSIGHTS </b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>ELMORE LEONARD</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>REVIEWED BY TIM DEFOREST </b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">In 1887, Dana Moon was an army scout and Bren Early was a calvary officer--both tasked to rescue a woman captured by Apaches. Not surprisingly for an Elmore Leonard novel, it's full of unique characters and sharp dialogue. The story is puncuated with violence while unexpected and (in one case) bizarre plot twists zigzag throughout. All this comes together to form a very entertaining Western.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-4325178214392759532023-01-11T13:44:00.001-08:002023-01-11T13:45:06.589-08:00WESTERN NOVELS—GUNS OF LEGEND #7 IN SATAN'S CIRCUS <div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdnFi1FeO1X0SL1XhzYLiPsOX1BZwd7U2sCaNgAKs7ouIGJ2_iINvG65ON4R0rT3_RZMx-vH6U_oFALfCIR2P3jBrxDq3h8ZbRN8ArmDHu7nyQ8ntiBeu2MdRlMQA-pHtK50qmHXqtFiId1VfLALYbLnqYF5LNuI8xaIkdVQrjOKovl08hJglzcQU4AQ/s475/FB_IMG_1672122169948.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="475" data-original-width="297" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdnFi1FeO1X0SL1XhzYLiPsOX1BZwd7U2sCaNgAKs7ouIGJ2_iINvG65ON4R0rT3_RZMx-vH6U_oFALfCIR2P3jBrxDq3h8ZbRN8ArmDHu7nyQ8ntiBeu2MdRlMQA-pHtK50qmHXqtFiId1VfLALYbLnqYF5LNuI8xaIkdVQrjOKovl08hJglzcQU4AQ/w400-h640/FB_IMG_1672122169948.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>WESTERN NOVELS</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>GUNS OF LEGEND #7</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>IN SATAN'S CIRCUS</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>BRODY WEATHERFORD</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>REVIEWED BY TIM DEFOREST</b> </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Tomcat Meyer, the lawman who was introduced as a supporting character in <i>Colorado City Kill</i>, takes center stage as the protagonist in this book. He's tasked by Allistar Legende to find a guy named Sid Graves and bring him to Legende.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">The purpose of this is fairly clear. Graves testified against a New York City mob boss. Legende arranged for him to get a new identity out West—a sort of Wild West version of the Witness Protection Program.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">But Graves is now making waves. He's getting involved in gambling and gunfights, and building a reputation that could bring him to the attention of assassins working for the New York </span><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">mob.</span>..<span style="font-family: verdana;">What's unclear is Graves' motivation. Why is he apparently setting himself up to get killed? </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">This is the premise for a fast-paced and extremely entertaining Western. There's plenty of action and several unexpected plot twists. Perhaps the greatest strength of the story are the characterizations. Every person Tomcat encounters, even if they are only around for a chapter or two, is given a unique personality. I've rarely encountered a book in which I've enjoyed meeting each and every character so much. Whether its a despicable villain such as the albino killer Cormac Paige or a well-dressed and well-spoken gentleman farmer named Bachelor Bates, all of them both advance the plot and add to the novel's unique atmosphere.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">The novel comes to a fantastic conclusion, involving an outlaw lair, an apparently hopeless situation, and a last-minute rescue involving some unusual weaponry.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Five of the seven <i>Guns of Legende</i> books have featured Frank Landry and Emily O'Connor as the main characters. They are absent from this book. Frank and Emily are strong protagonists and I have no problem with them being the series' usual heroes. But I'm glad to see an occasional book in which other agents of Allistar Legende get thrust into the spotlight. The series as a whole as built up a wonderful cast of regular and semi-regular characters. All of them deserve a chance to shine.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-62892697691300997972023-01-08T03:00:00.000-08:002023-01-08T03:00:00.162-08:00WESTERN NOVELS—RODEO RIDERS<div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOA9MZiC26ck6_qrIyt4DbFHOGj-5MsCiZ7iRIFJMkmHGITtNH-3w6YmZqpqdxuy14YkvuKRXP3jl0BJZ8SvnBP8TuJW9CR8gkYvThHBKMx2yQcr6iNd4KcsCQpEbvFw63JwFx-ua5k0cxczJds4KlsN65v76bz4DBVJb7XAelD77Bwej7dWqMzPZaNA/s475/51QHTZYWB2L.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="475" data-original-width="297" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOA9MZiC26ck6_qrIyt4DbFHOGj-5MsCiZ7iRIFJMkmHGITtNH-3w6YmZqpqdxuy14YkvuKRXP3jl0BJZ8SvnBP8TuJW9CR8gkYvThHBKMx2yQcr6iNd4KcsCQpEbvFw63JwFx-ua5k0cxczJds4KlsN65v76bz4DBVJb7XAelD77Bwej7dWqMzPZaNA/w400-h640/51QHTZYWB2L.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>WESTERN NOVELS</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">RODEO RIDERS</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;">Connected only by the theme of the rodeo, <i>Rodeo Riders</i> was a paperback original series cobbled together and packaged by Signet. We find Neil Fargo fighting for Pancho Villa, manning a Lewis machine gun as he fights a one-man rear guard action against the Federales. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Once the Lewis runs out of ammo, the ensuing running fight is used to remind us of each of Fargo's usual personal weapons. It's a fun twist on the usual formula, in which Fargo's personal weapons are inventoried for us while he inspects them before heading out on a job. That opening fight leads into a succession of unusual situations. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Fargo is accused of treachery and sentenced by Villa to die by firing squad. After this situation is resolved in a bizarre but satisfying manner, Fargo finds himself on a secret mission. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">The Great War is raging in Europe. To prevent the United States from joining in, the Germans are manipulating a faction of the Mexican army to start a war with the U.S. To stop this, Fargo has to make a dangerous journey back across northern Mexico, with an uncooperative and possibly treacherous woman for company. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Violence, captures, and escapes follow. In one intense chapter, Fargo finds himself buried in the ground in an upright position, with only his head exposed inside a corral. A very ill-tempered stallion also occupies that corral. It's all great stuff. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">I think the character twists involving the woman are predictable, but the fast-paced action never lets up. This is yet another winner in the Fargo series.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-67265914118667375702022-11-15T13:32:00.001-08:002022-11-15T13:32:19.902-08:00WESTERN NOVELS—DESERT STAKEOUT<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJU3Px7E8SoxBsfCe_czxemFRYrZ_O2QimbvFTLAYB8EdzKPtiOC9eGjafLZ-E3kqeF9gP38guSWxqg_u5-5zyFDFYgS2CgsbOrm3AO60Eh3-YEbdNe_rLq06V4WhlhCbtasTspUBh3WGNFgBpr3IFtsAo60NPcQLwC3SKst6s7QBehJ0-jamnOZ_wAQ/s475/FB_IMG_1668547509823.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="475" data-original-width="276" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJU3Px7E8SoxBsfCe_czxemFRYrZ_O2QimbvFTLAYB8EdzKPtiOC9eGjafLZ-E3kqeF9gP38guSWxqg_u5-5zyFDFYgS2CgsbOrm3AO60Eh3-YEbdNe_rLq06V4WhlhCbtasTspUBh3WGNFgBpr3IFtsAo60NPcQLwC3SKst6s7QBehJ0-jamnOZ_wAQ/w372-h640/FB_IMG_1668547509823.jpg" width="372" /></a></div>WESTERN NOVELS</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>DESERT STAKEOUT</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>HARRY WHITTINGTON</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>REVIEWED BY TIM DEFOREST </b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Blade Merrick, a sometimes scout for the army, is tasked with bringing a wagon-full of medicine to a epidemic-ridden mission. Whittington's characterizations are strong as well. Each person in the story, even the mostly despicable bad guys, have real dimension to their personalities. Merrick's past, including his history with the Apaches, is effectively foreshadowed so that when that past plays a key role in the novel's resolution, events play out in an unexpected and satisfying manner.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Much of the novel is Merrick and the outlaws playing cat-and-mouse with one another, with the situation eventually exploding into violence. At least we think its the climax, because when that situation is resolved, events spill into a SECOND brutal and tension-filled climax.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">This may be my favorite Whittington Western.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-12181916046352512872022-11-15T13:24:00.004-08:002022-11-15T13:24:34.410-08:00WESTERN NOVELS—FARGO: SHOTGUN MAN<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPEtKbOl-kUHiivuKhsPn5wKbVEG4RUlbnmDf_ImGQTAcj8neFFnoIRh5mNhuKyyWhFmW_cWSQ5WupWiNIYIN6wYiCvVgvqo8iMj-cQ702uyBIN8zuykkwH8Q9yyW8Yq8rm5x35vZnRS0pCBFALfETYpH0gVQgMtKf9Yl_s2PKSeo0YZY_YwoMobZtGw/s1391/FB_IMG_1668545833187_kindlephoto-891788577.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1391" data-original-width="826" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPEtKbOl-kUHiivuKhsPn5wKbVEG4RUlbnmDf_ImGQTAcj8neFFnoIRh5mNhuKyyWhFmW_cWSQ5WupWiNIYIN6wYiCvVgvqo8iMj-cQ702uyBIN8zuykkwH8Q9yyW8Yq8rm5x35vZnRS0pCBFALfETYpH0gVQgMtKf9Yl_s2PKSeo0YZY_YwoMobZtGw/w380-h640/FB_IMG_1668545833187_kindlephoto-891788577.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>WESTERN NOVELS</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>FARGO: SHOTGUN MAN</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>JOHN BENTEEN</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>REVIEWED BY TIM DEFOREST </b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Fargo is hired by Teddy Roosevelt to lead a scientific expedition down the largely unexplored Colorado River. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Why hire Fargo for such a job? The way the climax plays out is unexpected and powerful. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">This is a top-notch Fargo book from start to finish.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-43896509970852287872022-11-14T03:00:00.020-08:002022-11-14T03:00:00.165-08:00SIX-GUN JUSTICE PODCAST EPISODE #210—WORLDWIDE WEST TOUR: ENGLAND PT 2 <div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx-9wia6Klqy8tWIZw3hfuIXh07VMhnmFsqYtDZgcADMmDEu8tbA7YuF3nO4eLHzMDBTNGaguU5RrW8MS0oARrpWRpjfRLxqPA0rM_MbGO_L4vgv_spOyy2Z_0UAIshBW9cFfhDrGAl7OxeS6nkPdiTJbGsSgD4S3UT9rv2LfPKgGZqFI4EavJNcud0w/s500/6ttbe3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx-9wia6Klqy8tWIZw3hfuIXh07VMhnmFsqYtDZgcADMmDEu8tbA7YuF3nO4eLHzMDBTNGaguU5RrW8MS0oARrpWRpjfRLxqPA0rM_MbGO_L4vgv_spOyy2Z_0UAIshBW9cFfhDrGAl7OxeS6nkPdiTJbGsSgD4S3UT9rv2LfPKgGZqFI4EavJNcud0w/w640-h640/6ttbe3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>SIX-GUN JUSTICE PODCAST</b></div></b></div></b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>EPISODE #210</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>WORLDWIDE WEST TOUR</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>ENGLAND PART 2</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>WITH GUEST</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>ANDREW MCBRIDE</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Welcome back, buckaroos, for the second part of our Six-Gun Justice

"Dirty Deeds" is yet another winner in the Guns of Legende series.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-60677604380735567182022-10-23T06:32:00.005-07:002022-10-23T06:32:30.334-07:00WESTERN NOVELS—SHADOW VALLEY<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwkf9xcc2dSiNYKlKmh5G6bXaqUN32yFZijn-S11BzJ9c4ePBTfaeLQ1SDVGVmv0icQBbsq_tw4LUFNXyfrWnNCJoDT0zN_SI9S4ZwVidEpSmNg9gTZaxzgfkbqhKEcJpN1r84QnUo2Ody0KumWWD_A8IY90RvNqf0h-2sitNGCQE0agQF3jA-FP7bYg/s1397/FB_IMG_1666530318586_kindlephoto-2334860413.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1397" data-original-width="849" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwkf9xcc2dSiNYKlKmh5G6bXaqUN32yFZijn-S11BzJ9c4ePBTfaeLQ1SDVGVmv0icQBbsq_tw4LUFNXyfrWnNCJoDT0zN_SI9S4ZwVidEpSmNg9gTZaxzgfkbqhKEcJpN1r84QnUo2Ody0KumWWD_A8IY90RvNqf0h-2sitNGCQE0agQF3jA-FP7bYg/w388-h640/FB_IMG_1666530318586_kindlephoto-2334860413.jpg" width="388" /></a></div>WESTERN NOVELS</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>SHADOW VALLEY</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>GORDON D SHIRREFFS</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>REVIEWED BY TIM DEFOREST</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: xx-large;">Holt Cooper inherits a ranch in Shadow Valley after his brother is murdered. I've come to think of the Guns of Legende series as a sort-of western Mission Impossible, with agents assigned to missions as their particular skills dictated. So Frank and Emily are the Martin Landau and Barbara Bain of the series, appearing on a fairly regular basis.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">This time out, the plot is driven by a series of con jobs. The villain, Tate Holbrook, is running a scam on Colorado City, taking money on the false promise to provide the city with fresh water. When he commits a murder to protect himself, Legende sends Frank and Emily (along with another agent named Tomcat Meyer) to bring Holbrook to justice. This involves the good guys running a con of their own, designed to get Holbrook away from his ever-present bodyguards.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">It's a wonderfully constructed plot. Plans go awry, forcing Frank and Emily to improvise a new plan while being held at gunpoint. A half-dozen outlaw brothers show up, looking for revenge on Frank and Tomcat over another matter entirely, throwing yet another monkey wrench into their plans. And it will turn out that there might be other people around running cons of their own.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">There are a number of exciting action scenes, but the story's fast pace is driven largely by the efforts of different characters to outsmart each other. It's a Western AND a multi-faceted con artist tale. And it even sneaks in a look at the differences between justice and revenge. I loved it.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-20363456466737446262022-09-24T03:00:00.000-07:002022-09-24T03:00:00.156-07:00WESTERN NOVELS—DUEL IN DODGE CITY<div style="text-align: center;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4er4SKpEna4B3WLpHkhY6vrncRBbiocHdml4XZvdciVRxszZcTws02JPcQz_egS5XCUqBTD4nrEPAGgb5t9BUpQDhy6Xl6rZy8iRezdOdM2ykmPX2ZMCM0-RBECnMhUyh9wxVtZu7piVHXAj5NCbPkLM2LjgNS8lzRh5usEc_QKAXy1KI9YbmiI2erg/s500/FB_IMG_1662384356532.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="313" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4er4SKpEna4B3WLpHkhY6vrncRBbiocHdml4XZvdciVRxszZcTws02JPcQz_egS5XCUqBTD4nrEPAGgb5t9BUpQDhy6Xl6rZy8iRezdOdM2ykmPX2ZMCM0-RBECnMhUyh9wxVtZu7piVHXAj5NCbPkLM2LjgNS8lzRh5usEc_QKAXy1KI9YbmiI2erg/w400-h640/FB_IMG_1662384356532.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">WESTERN NOVELS</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">DUEL IN DODGE CITY</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">THE GUNS OF LEGENDE #4</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">BRODY WEATHERFORD</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">REVIEWED BY</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">TIM DEFOREST</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">In this volume, we meet an agent of Alistair Legende that we had not encountered before. And the first few short chapters of the book do a superb job of introducing us to him. Lucas Chambers is a gunfighter, but we also quickly learn that he's cool-headed when facing danger; that he can come up with clever plans but also is able to improvise on the fly; and that he has Chronic Hero Syndrome. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">In the first chapter, he's going up against another gunfighter who beat an aging prostitute to death, because the woman was the sister of a friend. Soon after, he randomly meets a child who's beloved dog was stolen and immediately undertakes the task of recovering the dog. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">We also learn that Lucas' wife was murdered, leaving him with what in some ways a very cynical outlook on life. The details of how his wife died and an encounter with the man responsible are weaved into the plot. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Lucas' mission is to prevent the assassination of presidential candidate Rutherford B. Lucas has to pretend to be stalking Rutherford Hayes, while at the same time watching his back in case other assassins try to take him out. Gunsmoke and Ice is the third in the series about a secret organization in the Old West that takes on missions given to it by (presumably) the government. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">In this case, the mission seems straightforward. A bank robbery in New Mexico leaves a politically-important man dead, so the Alistair Legende is tasked with bringing the killer to justice. He assigns beautiful gambler Emily O'Connor to the job. Emily's ex-husband--whiskey peddler Frank Landry-is also in the area. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">At first, though, he's not an official part of the mission. Instead, he's trying to buy a piece of the local moonshine action. The result is a story that is--at first--a little less structured than the earlier novels in the series. That's not a criticism, though. The storytelling style is appropriate to the plot, as both Emily and Frank are tossed in and out of danger.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Gradually, the action narrows to where the two are helping transport a wagon load of ice from Taos to Tombstone. For reasons that Frank and Emily do not at first understand, the one survivor of of the original bank robbers is relentlessly pursing that ice shipment. The plot allows for a lot of great action--with bullets flying fast and thick-- and we meet a number of very memorable supporting characters along the way.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-21058980256389972072022-09-22T03:00:00.000-07:002022-09-22T03:00:00.158-07:00WESTERN NOVELS—DEATH WAITS AT YELLOWSTONE<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9dP__hy_-j_JoAZW1b5kKXGf5R9Wg0Yu49xd_fjU5y6kiFw6NwyhJGYGh63tSoYwH3spFStwfi7QSOhQ4DiHutO6Fmy_sYpCDJlvmu6p0oDlFFSb0rf9dCipDQg8o9QW-7RC79M_WE0NXVW4d1QQIiQ2SNrq-9S0iHMxN9F7H5LVE0gSdgdlJniD4ow/s499/41+oXxTThML._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="313" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9dP__hy_-j_JoAZW1b5kKXGf5R9Wg0Yu49xd_fjU5y6kiFw6NwyhJGYGh63tSoYwH3spFStwfi7QSOhQ4DiHutO6Fmy_sYpCDJlvmu6p0oDlFFSb0rf9dCipDQg8o9QW-7RC79M_WE0NXVW4d1QQIiQ2SNrq-9S0iHMxN9F7H5LVE0gSdgdlJniD4ow/w402-h640/41+oXxTThML._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" width="402" /></a></div>WESTERN NOVELS</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>DEATH WAITS AT YELLOWSTONE</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>GUNS OF LEGENDE #2</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>BRODY WEATHERFORD</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>REVIEWED BY</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>TIM DEFOREST</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Another excellent entry in the <i>Guns of Legende</i> series...This one starts with two separate story lines. In one of these, two agents of Alistair Legende are assigned to find a party of VIPs who are apparently lost in the Yellowstone area (which has only recently been made a park by the federal government). </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">I don't want to give too much away, because the mystery behind this unfolds in a very satisfying manner, but the reason for the party's disappearance has to do with a haven for outlaws hidden in a remote section of the park. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Another agent looks into a group of apparent bad guys (called the Scarlet Rogues because they wear red shirts) that has taken an interest in Legende's supposedly secret Society of Buckhorn and Bison. Both story lines include a solid mystery to solve, great action and strong characterizations. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Eventually, the two story lines join together, unexpected alliances are formed, and the book is brought to a violent and exciting conclusion. The entire story is expertly constructed, with the several plot threads and the actions of the various characters all getting tied together in the climax. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">The two main protagonists, Frank Landry and Emily O'Conner, worked separately in the first novel. In this one, they work together. Because they were once married, but now claim to dislike one another, this allows for some fun interactions between them. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Some of my favorite highlights from the book include: an encounter in a back alley in Denver that unfolds in an unexpected and very entertaining manner; a truly exciting gun fight in the streets of a small town; a scene in which two sets of protagonists simultaneously outsmart one of the villains in two different ways; and a brutal hand-to-hand fight between Frank Landry and a very dangerous opponent. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">I also learned about the Gardner Machine Gun--a real-life weapon developed in the 1870s that plays an imporant role in the novel. It's always fun when a bit of obscure history gets included in a Western. Like <i>Front Range Rebellion</i>, <i>Death Waits at Yellowstone</i> is a wonderful example of expert storytelling. <i>The Guns of Legende</i> series is two-for-two so far.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-69570367750848958972022-09-21T06:27:00.000-07:002022-09-21T06:27:37.178-07:00WESTERN NOVELS—FRONT RANGE REBELLION<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBSGuNA8NwrqZYP7qVAQud3zBO6B7CUt9LWyJ66lx-gMKnmFKfuYoRZmDlAQhJgvJCRNjk9PvUt8sp6DR-Yq0pBSmcOD8ZMdFCUPEqKeReopYHDdCdNFjwtdsftsuA0vKhy4bCjsJpI1KIujXNxtzcew3eJkRUrqkO1YDvbNeMS8OFN4yj-dUPzJRDDA/s630/9798444574218_p0_v1_s1200x630.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="393" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBSGuNA8NwrqZYP7qVAQud3zBO6B7CUt9LWyJ66lx-gMKnmFKfuYoRZmDlAQhJgvJCRNjk9PvUt8sp6DR-Yq0pBSmcOD8ZMdFCUPEqKeReopYHDdCdNFjwtdsftsuA0vKhy4bCjsJpI1KIujXNxtzcew3eJkRUrqkO1YDvbNeMS8OFN4yj-dUPzJRDDA/w400-h640/9798444574218_p0_v1_s1200x630.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>WESTERN NOVELS</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>FRONT RANGE REBELLION</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>THE GUNS OF LEGENDE #1</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>BRODY WEATHERFORD</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>REVIEWED BY</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>TIM DEFOREST</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">The first in a series that has a sort-of Old West "Mission: Impossible" vibe, "Front Range Rebellion" is set in 1876 and involves a secret organization run by a man named Allister Legende. Legende receives assignments from the Federal government, then assigns agents to fulfill those assignments.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">In this case, an insane soldier named Carlton Clark has raised an army of outlaws, robbed a train carrying gold to fund operations, and plans on making Colorado an independent nation before it joins the Union as a new state.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">To foil this, Legende recruits a fast-talking whiskey salesman named Frank Landry. Frank is also very, very handy with the .36 Navy revolver he carries. Also recruited is the beautiful Emily O'Conner, who is a highly skilled and very observant gambler. Legende doesn't learn until after he recruits the two that they had once been married.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">The book is an enormously fun read. The plot is expertly constructed. We get short but informative introductory chapters that bring Clark, Landry and Emily into the story quickly and effectively.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">The very first chapter, for instance, recounts the train robbery carried out by Clark and his men. It's action-packed, while also teaching us that Clark is a skilled sniper, a ruthless man willing to slaughter anyone who gets in his way, and probably quite insane. That chapter tells us that Clark is a dangerous man and presents a serious threat.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">When Frank and Emily are put on the case, the story jumps back and forth between them, but does so smoothly so that we can always follow the overall plot. Frank infiltrates Clark's army and Emily works to uncover a traitor on the territorial governor's staff. Both story arcs gives us plenty of action and present us with intelligent heroes who often have to think very fast on their feet to keep themselves alive and get the job done. Several great plot twist are dropped in as the story races along.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">The book ends with a superb battle scene, with the situation changing rapidly, leading to a tense sniper duel...The book really is enormous fun. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4382184062705153003.post-47256604762420298372022-09-19T03:00:00.026-07:002022-09-19T06:25:56.612-07:00SIX-GUN JUSTICE PODCAST EPISODE #206—WORLDWIDE WEST TOUR: AUSTRALIA PART 2<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJEUQGSBIe0-465xgtlTz-G5y8IAeY9IGnovjicDMHRyOcrw_GY0lzZ_E_VgKtTGn0Dgo3pOU2Cxrafdm94NW5mT57XDGsEq_5M3hPccKySKc0YtCI3EyVq6rvsunnl_O5m9OhSQbR742YiO1YPwzNgtwlV-kg7Qk8i0SFgWx2SSfSf-mrm4jrKIkKw/s500/6p9zni.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJEUQGSBIe0-465xgtlTz-G5y8IAeY9IGnovjicDMHRyOcrw_GY0lzZ_E_VgKtTGn0Dgo3pOU2Cxrafdm94NW5mT57XDGsEq_5M3hPccKySKc0YtCI3EyVq6rvsunnl_O5m9OhSQbR742YiO1YPwzNgtwlV-kg7Qk8i0SFgWx2SSfSf-mrm4jrKIkKw/w640-h640/6p9zni.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>SIX-GUN JUSTICE PODCAST</b></div></b></div></b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>EPISODE #206</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>WORLD WIDE WEST TOUR</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>AUSTRALIA PART 2</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>WITH SPECIAL GUEST</b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><b>ANDREW NETTE</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">G'day, cowpokes...It's time to lasso your kangaroo down, mate, as the <i>Six-Gun Justice Podcast's Worldwide West Tour </i>continues its stop in the Land Down Under. Set in the early 20th Century, these tales were published in Argosy Magazine beginning in 1935. They are hilarious.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">In the first tale, Henry (aging, fat and balding) is no longer getting as many theater bookings. But his luck seems to turn when he inherits a ranch in Arizona from an uncle he had never met.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">Henry knows nothing about ranching, but what has he to lose? He travels to Tonto City, AR and is soon embroiled in a murder case. Henry is drunk more often than sober, unable to ride a horse and unable to even come close to a target when he tries to shoot a gun. But he has two things going for him--he has a sense of right and wrong buried in him somewhere and he has a talent for Sherlock Holmesian-level deductions. By the end of the first story, he's solved the murder. At the beginning of the second story, he's been elected sheriff of Tonto County.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: x-large;">The stories work on two levels. First, as I said, they are hilariously funny. Both Henry and the supporting cast provide slapstick humor and witty dialogue. Second, the mysteries that Henry must solve are solid--even while leavening the stories with absurdist humor, the author builds strong plots and brings them to satisfying conclusions.</span></div>Sixgun Justicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813853413174592890noreply@blogger.com0
